General structure of a black and white cinematographic film. The cellulose nitrate or acetate base is the thickest layer and it is the support of the image. The image is formed by silver colloids dispersed in a proteinaceous matrix which is adhered to the support, usually, by a layer of protein-based gelatin and cellulose nitrate or acetate (subbing layer). The anti-halation layer is a proteinaceous matrix with anti-halation dyes (e.g., acid fuchsin or malachite green) that prevents light to be reflected in the emulsion causing a halo effect
