XRD patterns obtained from modern willow compared to archaeological wood excavated from the Neolithic site of Sweet Track (Somerset, UK) (author’s own data). A loss of crystallinity with increasing decay is indicated by a decreasing depth of the ‘trough’ between the two peaks in the archaeological sample. A crystallinity index can be calculated from the height of the trough (Iamph) and the height of the crystalline peak at 23o 2ϴ (Icryst)
