Critical crack separation distance (S/t)cr for cupped panel paintings established for various thicknesses (5, 10 or 20 mm) and orientations of the wooden support in which hygric strain of wood in the x-direction was 0.01. Values of (S/t)cr obtained for flat panel paintings uniaxially stretched are shown for comparison [22]. The effect of cupping for panels 20 mm thick was very small and the plots are not presented
