Energy release rate GI for a flaw located at the gesso surface. The parameter was determined for varying gesso stiffness and length h of a flaw (0.01–0.4 mm). A percentage of the final GI for the case of the gesso layer with no cracks is given for S/t of 40. The dashed line indicates the average value of GIC determined for gessoes of PVC 92, 89 and 85%. The applied strain εx was 0.01
